DIY // Make Your Own Cold Brew

cold brew 4

It’s hot as hell and hot coffee just isn’t sitting right – so jump on the cold brew bandwagon! You’ll be so glad you did.

I have two babies; therefore I need coffee and am completely addicted to it. But in this heat the last thing I’m craving is a hot coffee. So I have turned to cold brewed coffee and I’m just loving every minute of it. SO SATISFYING! And making your own will save you a few pennies too! Always a bonus.

Making your own cold brew is just so darn simple. I read a few tutorials before undertaking this task – see here, here and here. If I can do this  – so can you!

Materials:

-Coarsely ground coffee

-large vessel

-large air tight container

-Mesh Sieve

-paper towel or cheese cloth

-whole coffee beans (optional)

To make 7 cups of cold brew, add at least 2 cups of coarsely ground coffee to a large bowl. Cover the the coffee with at least 8 cups of cold water. Give it a good stir to ensure all of the coffee is covered with water.

Place this mixture in an air tight container and let it sit for at least 8 hours.  If you can let it sit for 24 hours that is even better.

You are now ready to strain the water from the coffee grounds. Place some paper towel in a mesh sieve. Press the grounds with the back of a wooden spoon to really extract all the coffee goodness.

You can store your coffee in an air tight container for at least two weeks, probably longer! I garnished my cold brew with whole bean encrusted ice cubes. This is absolutely delicious and I highly recommend it! Just sprinkle some whole coffee beans over the water in an ice cube tray and freeze it. Of course I used espresso beans for this – I don’t mess around! Don’t forget a festive paper straw – which you can pick up from the shop! Enjoy!
